Goal Planning / Multi Goal Planning / Staggered Start Goal Planning

Set a target amount and a timeframe — this tool works out the yearly contribution needed to get there, with an optional inflation adjustment so the target keeps its real value. Switch to Multi Goal Planning to plan for up to 9 goals at once, or to Staggered Start Goal Planning when your goals begin saving in different years.

Leave inflation blank to solve for the target as entered. Fill it in to first inflate the target forward so it keeps today's purchasing power, then solve for that larger amount.

Enter a target amount, rate, and years — target must be greater than the initial amount's future value.

How this calculator works

Whether you're saving for a home, a car, education, a wedding, or another financial goal, this calculator works out how much you'd need to contribute each year to reach your target — and shows you the full year-by-year path to get there.

How it works

  1. Enter your target amount — how much you expect to need, in today's terms
  2. Enter years — how many years until you need the money
  3. Add your initial amount (optional) — anything you've already saved toward this goal
  4. Enter your annual rate — the return you expect your savings or investments to earn
  5. Optional: expected inflation rate — if your target is stated in today's terms, add this to see what it actually grows to by the time you need it

Your result

  • Required yearly contribution — the headline number: what you'd need to invest each year
  • Total invested — the sum of everything you put in over the whole period
  • Total interest — how much of the final amount comes from growth, not your own contributions
  • Reaches — the balance you actually end up with, confirming it matches your target
  • Target (today's terms) / Target (inflation-adjusted) — shown side by side only when inflation is turned on

Example 1 — without inflation

You enter: target amount 10,000,000 · years 10 · initial amount 500,000 · annual rate 8% · inflation off

The calculator shows: required yearly contribution 615,780 · total invested 6,657,801 · total interest 3,342,199 · reaches 10,000,000

Example 2 — same goal, now with inflation added

Same inputs as above, but you turn inflation on and enter 6%.

The calculator shows: target (today's terms) 10,000,000 · target (inflation-adjusted) 17,908,477 · required yearly contribution 1,161,698 · total invested 12,116,983 · total interest 5,791,494 · reaches 17,908,477

Same goal, same rate, same time horizon — but because the target itself grows with inflation, the required yearly contribution nearly doubles. This is exactly what the inflation toggle is protecting you from: if you only plan around today's number, you can hit it exactly and still fall short of what you actually need.

Year-by-year breakdown

Every result also comes with a full table below it, showing exactly how the balance builds — Year, Opening balance, Interest earned, Contribution, and Closing balance for each year of the plan. Using Example 1's numbers, the first few rows look like this:

YearOpeningInterestContributionClosing
1500,00040,000615,7801,155,780
21,155,78092,462615,7801,864,022
31,864,022149,122615,7802,628,924
……………
108,689,091695,127615,78010,000,000

So you're never just trusting one final number — you can see exactly how the balance grows every single year, and confirm the final row lands on your target.

About the Goal Achievement Estimator

How affordability is worked out

After you calculate a plan, the Goal Achievement Estimator checks whether your income can pay for it. Enter your yearly income, an optional second income, and your yearly expenses. Please also fill in the yearly increase for each, because a raise every year or costs that climb with prices can change the answer a lot. Each can be between -20% and 100%.

Inflation

The Estimator uses only the inflation you entered in your Goal Planning calculation and never asks for it again. If you entered one, your goal targets grow with it, which raises the yearly saving your plan needs; if you left it blank, no inflation is applied anywhere. Your income and expenses are not adjusted for inflation automatically, so use their yearly increase boxes for that.

Savings against what your goals need

The graph compares your savings (income minus expenses) with what your goals need each year, so you can see which years fall short and which have enough. A yearly breakdown is one click away.

Covering the gap with borrowing

If some years fall short, you can see what it would cost to cover the gap by borrowing. Enter a borrowing interest rate and the Estimator shows what is borrowed each year, the interest added, and when the debt is paid off. A yearly breakdown is available.

Goals you could reach earlier

If you have spare savings in the later years, you can see which goals could be reached earlier by adding that money to them, and by when all your goals could be done. A yearly breakdown is available.

Disclaimer: The Goal Achievement Estimator is not a loan provider or a tool that suggests loans. It is only an estimator based on the figures you enter, and it does not recommend borrowing. Real loan terms and your actual income and expenses will differ, so treat the results as a rough guide and not as financial advice.
